Our next sermon series (from 4th May 2025): the Book of Esther ("The unseen hand behind the throne")

Imagine a country which is by far the most powerful in the world, with ambitions to become yet greater still by absorbing a neighbouring territory (whose name begins Gree…); this country is ruled over by an autocrat who is not that intelligent, but who is full of self-importance & vanity, who pursues power & pleasure in equal measure, and who is known for his sensual self-indulgence, particularly with regards to wine & women. He is prone to fits of temper, liable to hire & fire staff at a moment’s notice, and his decision-making is often bizarre to say the least. I wonder what, or who, has come to your mind?

In fact, the above is meant to describe the kingdom of Persia in the 5th century BC under the rule of King Xerxes. This is the setting for the Old Testament Book of Esther, which describes how the small, weak & vulnerable Jewish community is threatened with genocide at the hands of the scheming Haman, the evil chief minister of King Xerxes. In terms of chronology, this is one of the last books of the Old Testament to be written, and helps Christians to understand what it must be like to be a small minority living in a powerful, secular state – and how God, while not visible in the way He was in the earlier books of the Old Testament, is nevertheless at work to preserve his people and maintain a witness to His name.

From the beginning of May through to the beginning of July we will be considering the Old Testament Book of Esther on Sunday mornings at Scott Drive. In the evenings we will be looking at the Book of Revelation at the Church on the Green, Budleigh Salterton.

Are we being deceived part 1

Are we being deceived? Is Deception the hallmark of our times? A couple of months ago, the Dyson Report laid bare the deception used by Martin Bashir to obtain the interview with Diana – but actually this is symptomatic of the whole realm of public and political life, where lies and deceit are commonplace.

Death - the final frontier

Death - the final frontier

Death - the final frontier Many of you will remember the opening phrase of each episode of the original Star Trek series: Space – the final frontier… It’s an attractive idea – it plays to our sense that the human race will continue to blaze a trail somewhere in the Universe; that, should the earth give way, humanity can always find some sort of hope for itself by colonising space – an idea that Stephen Hawking also promoted.
